Life is Short, Take the Scenic Route

I love spur of the moment trips. Whether a day trip to the ocean or an impromptu over night trip somewhere. We have had some time on our hands and wanting to take advantage, decided to enjoy some of the great sights around the East Coast. There's so much to see and explore here.

So we got in the car and drove to The Cape. It's literally just over an hour to get there. The weather has been nice but the season hasn't officially started yet so there wasn't a huge crowd of tourist or ridiculous traffic. It was perfect and exactly what we needed.

Jim suggested throwing the bikes in the truck so we would have them once we got there. We rode them all over Martha's Vineyard. Took little pit stops to see points of interest and had a few little surprises along the way. We found a quaint little cafe behind a bookstore where we had lunch on the patio. Stopped by an Alpaca farm where we met these funny furry guys. They were actually for sale and can be shipped to most places in the U.S. Can you imagine having a pet Alpaca?

Another little treat was an adorable town called Sandwich. I know. Sandwich! I had made friends with a couple of ladies while waiting to board the ferry. They told us about a flea market that was going on the next day. I suggested to Jim we go ready to run and find a route along the beach afterward. So we did. The flea market was fun, we bought one overpriced, used softball for Annie and I talked Jim out of other "antiques" we didn't need. It was just good to be out meeting people and breathing in fresh air.

I had heard about a boardwalk in Sandwich and it was there that I got another one of God's little surprises. Maybe it's my thing for bridges and pathways or for the ocean and salty air but I was refreshed. I took one look at that boardwalk that leaded straight to the water and I wanted to run it.
It dropped right down to the sand that hit the edge of the ocean. It was beautiful.

You know sometimes I can forget the little blessings God offers us in just the beauty around us. The ocean always reminds me of His greatness. It's so massive and powerful yet calming at the same time. I think for me, it's another one of His ways of saying "I'm in complete control and I've got this". Life is bigger than what I see in front of me. Bigger than my circumstances and His power is greater than anything I can imagine. He is calm when I am tempted to freak out.

Sometimes, it's those little scenic routes in our journey that refresh us to go the next mile. It's when we stop to look for Him in the nature He created. To breath in His goodness around us and know that He is there and He is in control. He offers us refreshment along the way. How often do I miss it because I am too busy with my own agenda or rushing to the next place?

This little get away was exactly what I needed to remind me that God is good, He is good to me and He will refresh me along the way. Life is just too short not to take the scenic route every now and then.

Pressing On

“I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint.””
Jeremiah 31:25 NIV

“he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.”
Psalm 23:3 NIV

“Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.”
Psalm 90:2 NIV

  1. That really sounds like a wonderful trip, Connie! I would love to see that area of the country. I agree with you about the ocean being so powerful and so calming, just like God. There is something about nature that gives a peacefulness to your soul. I'm so glad you got to experience all the treasures that God had for you that day!

The Season of Spring

The mornings are so beautiful right now that I want to soak them in before the scorching heat is in its full glory. The sun comes up shortly after I do this time of year. My favorite thing to do is grab my bible, journal and a cup of coffee and sit out back with Annie while the sun rises. The birds are literally singing, the quail make more of a squawk like sound than a song but I love it.   Occasionally, I will hear an owl on a neighboring rooftop or the party of a pack of coyotes in the distance celebrating their recent conquest. I’m always surprised that these sounds don’t faze Annie one bit. Make no mistake, if the trash truck or other large vehicle drives past our dividing wall she goes absolutely K-9, as if she’s military, saving us from being attacked. Bless her heart.   Spring typically comes early in Phoenix and is somewhat short lived. I often think we go from Winter to Summer with seemingly little time to wear any of the light weight sweaters I have hangi...

Cravings

Last Monday was one of those gloomy days. Gray skies and pouring rain. Just was well, I had stuff to do. Maybe it was the Monday blues, the dreary weather, missing my family or the chocolate hangover I had from the plethora of Easter candy I consumed, but I was somewhat depressed. I couldn't seem to snap out of it.  So, I cleaned up the house, I packed up the Easter decorations and did a few loads of laundry. I needed to feel productive. I took a shower but didn't bother putting on make-up. I did however put on a clean pair of pj's. Pathetic, I know but I wasn't up for leaving the house; so why waste an outfit and generate more laundry for myself? Besides, I couldn't put the same Jammie's on and have my husband think I didn't do anything all day. Goodness!  I couldn't put my finger on why I was down so I just stayed in and read the rest of the day. I am re-reading The Purpose Driven Life in our bible study and am finding it to be incredibly encouraging a...

A Shot in the Arm

Sometimes, I need a shot in the arm. Today was one of those days. I've been a bit angry and fighting the temptation to get bitter since things haven't exactly been going my way lately. I know I shouldn't complain. I have so much to be thankful for. But truth be told, I absolutely, strongly dislike moving. It stinks! And we've done it four times now in 8 months. Might be a bit of an exaggeration since two of which were moving in and out of temporary housing but it's moving just the same. So much stupid stuff goes along with moving. The transferring utilities into our name, have you called a utility company lately? They are peachy to deal with once you get through the menu and actually get a person. Then they have to come out to install and that rarely goes smoothly. Drivers license, Car registration, Doctors, Dentist, more importantly, hair stylist! All new again. And of course, I'm anticipating all the boxes of paper stuffed items that will roll off the truck an...
