Life is Short, Take the Scenic Route

I love spur of the moment trips. Whether a day trip to the ocean or an impromptu over night trip somewhere. We have had some time on our hands and wanting to take advantage, decided to enjoy some of the great sights around the East Coast. There's so much to see and explore here.

So we got in the car and drove to The Cape. It's literally just over an hour to get there. The weather has been nice but the season hasn't officially started yet so there wasn't a huge crowd of tourist or ridiculous traffic. It was perfect and exactly what we needed.

Jim suggested throwing the bikes in the truck so we would have them once we got there. We rode them all over Martha's Vineyard. Took little pit stops to see points of interest and had a few little surprises along the way. We found a quaint little cafe behind a bookstore where we had lunch on the patio. Stopped by an Alpaca farm where we met these funny furry guys. They were actually for sale and can be shipped to most places in the U.S. Can you imagine having a pet Alpaca?

Another little treat was an adorable town called Sandwich. I know. Sandwich! I had made friends with a couple of ladies while waiting to board the ferry. They told us about a flea market that was going on the next day. I suggested to Jim we go ready to run and find a route along the beach afterward. So we did. The flea market was fun, we bought one overpriced, used softball for Annie and I talked Jim out of other "antiques" we didn't need. It was just good to be out meeting people and breathing in fresh air.

I had heard about a boardwalk in Sandwich and it was there that I got another one of God's little surprises. Maybe it's my thing for bridges and pathways or for the ocean and salty air but I was refreshed. I took one look at that boardwalk that leaded straight to the water and I wanted to run it.
It dropped right down to the sand that hit the edge of the ocean. It was beautiful.

You know sometimes I can forget the little blessings God offers us in just the beauty around us. The ocean always reminds me of His greatness. It's so massive and powerful yet calming at the same time. I think for me, it's another one of His ways of saying "I'm in complete control and I've got this". Life is bigger than what I see in front of me. Bigger than my circumstances and His power is greater than anything I can imagine. He is calm when I am tempted to freak out.

Sometimes, it's those little scenic routes in our journey that refresh us to go the next mile. It's when we stop to look for Him in the nature He created. To breath in His goodness around us and know that He is there and He is in control. He offers us refreshment along the way. How often do I miss it because I am too busy with my own agenda or rushing to the next place?

This little get away was exactly what I needed to remind me that God is good, He is good to me and He will refresh me along the way. Life is just too short not to take the scenic route every now and then.

Pressing On

“I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint.””
Jeremiah 31:25 NIV

“he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.”
Psalm 23:3 NIV

“Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.”
Psalm 90:2 NIV

  1. That really sounds like a wonderful trip, Connie! I would love to see that area of the country. I agree with you about the ocean being so powerful and so calming, just like God. There is something about nature that gives a peacefulness to your soul. I'm so glad you got to experience all the treasures that God had for you that day!

RBJ and a Barf Bag

It’s been thirty years since I got breast implants. Having birthed and nursed two babies my boobs were left looking like tube socks sporting tennis balls in each one dangling from my chest. At twenty-eight years old, living in the world that put so much importance on outward appearance, I thought that I needed enhancement to feel better about myself. Looking back, maybe it did serve its purpose for a while. But, I was never truly comfortable with them. They were larger than I wanted and I’m fairly modest so I don’t like the attention I thought they brought in my younger years. Shopping for clothes, especially swimsuits has always been a challenge for me. All those cute summer dresses made me look pregnant and bras were very uncomfortable. I’m not anti-plastic surgery, implants or whatever. I’m just older and in a different stage in life and view things from a more Godly perspective now that I seek His ways for my life. I’ve known for several years that the implants in my body nee...

Cool Mornings and Coyotes

This is the time of year we all sing praises for living in Arizona. Cool enough in the morning and evenings to call for a light jacket and/or patio heater while the perfect temp midday allows doors and windows to be open letting in the fresh air. Ah, Spring! It also makes for a great morning since the sun comes up a little earlier. Annie loves it too since I can once again, take her with me on an early morning run.   I’m still somewhat of a chicken to run in the dark alone even with her. But these crisp mornings have been great and sunrises are my favorite. So, off we went the other day just as the sun was rising.   We did our typical run through the neighbor that has become so familiar to not only me but Annie as well. She even has the same spots to relieve herself. She likes to lead and I like to let her think she is, but I do have her on somewhat of a short leash. Mostly, because she is stronger than I am and I really don’t want any more road rash than she’s been...

Building Bridges

I have a thing about bridges. I love them. I like old rustic bridges no matter how large or small. I like creaky  wooden ones. I like gigantic, historical bridges that connect big cities to quaint little towns. I like walking bridges that get me across a small body of water or over steep, rocky terrain. There is just something about a bridge to me, that says, "Come over, there is something really cool over here and it's worth the trip". Something so much so, that a bridge was necessary and someone invested their time and money to build it. I remember a few years ago on our last trip to San Francisco. We rented bikes and rode across the Golden Gate Bridge. It was amazing! When we got to the other side we were in a quaint little town called Sausalito . We sat outside near the water, in a little cafe and had lunch. The view of the bay was entirely different from this point of view. Not only that you could see the San Francisco skyline and the whole city itself. Definitely wo...
